That’s a good question! What’s the Big Idea Magazine (abbreviated
from here out as WTBIM) is put out not to convince anybody that the ideas
within are correct and should become a way of life. WTBIM is meant only as an interesting and
lighthearted way to look at ideas that most people have heard of but of which
very few people really have a good understanding. For example, for the “Satyagraha” edition
(Volume 1), I tried my best to discuss not only what the idea of nonviolent
resistance is (as seen by Gandhi), but also some of its shortcomings.
So, what was my point in making
this thing? In short (and because I
like bulleted lists):
This magazine is intended to:
- Be entertaining. I read the boring source material so
you don’t have to (though I will also provide information about where
you can learn more, should you be interested in doing so).
- Inform the reader
about interesting ideas. I
pick the ideas for WTBIM based on topics that I find personally
interesting but don’t really know much about. I hope you’ll find them interesting,
too.
- Be suitable for
teachers and classroom use.
Though I didn’t even forsee that anybody would ever want to use
this with a class, it turns out that there has been pretty strong
interest. Please rest assured
that the magazine is written in an acceptable style and sense of humor
suitable for students. For
information about classroom use, email me
at us@wtbim.org.
- Give a balanced view
of the idea being discussed. On
the rare occasion that I express my personal opinion, I’ll make it clear
that it’s my personal opinion so you know that it’s not necessarily what
the world at large thinks.
- Be free! It wouldn’t do much good for me to
come up with a magazine to discuss interesting ideas if nobody reads
it. I won’t charge anybody, ever,
for this magazine.
This magazine is NOT intended to:
- Convert you. My goal is not to make you believe
that this magazine represents some Higher Truth that you should base
your life on. It’s merely to
inform you about ideas that have changed the world. If you do find these ideas
interesting, make sure you get several opposing viewpoints before
dedicating your life to anything. Mainly, it’s my hope that people of
any background can enjoy this magazine and maybe learn something along
the way.
- Give the impression
that it represents the fullness of any idea discussed. Hey, it’s a short magazine about a big
topic – please realize that it won’t discuss any subject in its
entirety, because I don’t have room to do so. If you think that I haven’t discussed
some aspect of the idea completely, I can almost guarantee that you’re
right.
- Be boring. I sure hope the magazine isn’t boring,
because that kind of defeats the whole purpose.
Please enjoy and read the
magazine and feel free to email me at us@wtbim.org with any feedback you have.
