What is the definition of an organic compound?

Question:  What is an organic compound?  Are methane, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, and ethanol all examples of organic compounds?

Answer:  Organic compounds are usually considered to be compounds that contain carbon, but aren't pure oxides of carbon.  As a result, if it contains carbon, it's organic with the exception of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
