If batteries have acid in them, and the word "alkaline" means "basic", how can alkaline batteries contain acid?

Answer

The type of battery that has acid in it is different than alkaline batteries.  An example of a battery containing acid is the lead-acid battery in a car, which contains lead and sulfuric acid.  Alkaline batteries, on the other hand, have zinc and MnO electrodes with an alkaline electrolyte for carrying electrical charge.
