This past
weekend we had a great time at the mighty SIDEBAR in BALTIMORE. We got
there just in time to see DIE CHEERLEADER DIE, who if you don’t know
sport some powerful dual girl vocals. Really nice people too. I think I
need to see more of this band, they definitely have an original sound
going on.
Show Review-Famous in Vegas Page - 4/06/2003 @ The Sidebar Baltimore, MD
Die Cheerleader Die kicked
off the night with a powerful rock n roll attack. Guitarist and
vocalist Marni Frank seemed mild mannered until she plugged in and
started to play and sing. What a nasty, cool punk rock voice! She
traded off verses and songs with vocalist Tiffany Wynn, who also had a
marvelous sound. The two voices together were the perfect mix.

I
haven't' seen them in awhile the best way to describe their
sound would be a healthy mix of Bikini Kill and Distillers with
lots of attitude. They had some rocking songs like "Sexual
Faux-Pas" and "Sugar and Spice" have many tongue in cheek lyrics. They
ended their set with a song about rocking out without cocks
gotta love that! Just be careful to not get to close up front,
they like to spit stuff at people in their audience.

DIE CHEERLEADER DIE -- self-titled SRCD
Mutant
Pop goes riot grrrl?!?!?! Riot grrrl goes pop-punk?!?!?!?Fuck, I don't
know, both of those statements are pretty darned true... DIE
CHEERLEADER DIE (DCD) hail from one of the hottest punk scenes
in the United States, Baltimore, MD. There is one and only one point of
reference that makes any sense at all: BIKINI KILL, circa
Reject All American and the "Rebel Girl" seven-inch. In a just world,
this would be on Kill Rock Stars and I would be selling it to ya in
the Mutant Pop catalog. But this is NOT a just world and
duty calls... This flat-out fucking ROCKS!!! From the first notes of
"Lesbian Action" to the final anti-gun anthem, these two girls and two
boys are gonna be in your fucking face... PUNK ROCK!!! Get ready to
feel the savage blade of death, pussy boys!!! (Actually, I joke just a
little, this band is actually quite catchy and I don't expect that any
punk fans are gonna have the slightest problem with this
band's tuneage, which is hooky, gritty, and good... An interesting mix
of sweetsy girl vox with snarling, snapping JOHNNY
ROTTEN-type vocal sneer. You will dig!) Go see 'em on tour, too, God
damn it!!! - Mutant

DIE CHEERLEADER DIE -- self-titled SRCD
Sometimes
music says things you wish you could say. Sometimes musicians portray
things you wish you had thought of. Die Cheerleader Die do this from
the point of view of young punk women. The Cd starts off with I Wanna
Be A Slut. It's from a girl who's tired of being pure. She wants to go
out tonight and find sex. Like all these songs there are appropriate
punk cords. This one has a nice guitar solo. Two vocalists alternate
the shouting. The drummer makes a lot of use of the cymbals. It's very
energetic music. This will have everybody slammin. Boys and girls and
grrrls. Years ago The Sex Pistols told us about Queer Bird. Now Die
Cheerleader Die give us Lesbian Action. It's a little slower punk rock.
There's a second vocal part on this and some other songs. This girl has
tryed boys. But, discovered girls. She hopes her parents wont find out.
This seven song Cd ends with Sugar N' Spice. It encourages. girls to
take the lead in the punk scene instead of leaving it to the boys. Die
Cheerleader Die say "Some people say chicks can't play. Don't give a
fuck what they say." The song consists of short bursts of music
followed by shouted statements. The Cd does what it sets out to do. The
band thinks you should do what ever you want to do. - Metal Maiden

DIE CHEERLEADER DIE -- self-titled SRCD
Die
Cheerleader Die’s SRCD has been compared to Bikini Kill, a logical
comparison to make given the name of the band and some of the
sentiments expressed in the lyrics. However, the similarities end
there. Vocals are sung rather than screamed over mid-tempo, melodic
poppy punk that bears little resemblance to Bikini Kill at all. These
songs are easy on the ears and catchy as hell, not to mention a lot of
fun. The lyrics include references to “lesbian action,” “being a slut,”
and guys who are “pussy-whipped.” Not your average pop-punk lyrics, but
Die Cheerleader Die is not your average pop-punk band. I like bands
like this because they push buttons and challenge social mores without
being condescending or preachy. Don't let the preceding sentence scare
you. I liked this a lot. Will you? http://www.punk-information.com/

Chasing the American Nightmare
Baltimore and DC's own DCD is back proclaiming their anger
of a world full of outdated stereotypes. The band itself
is made up of two males and two females. They combine riot grrl punk
rock with overpowering street punk riffs and a lot of rock. The album
opens up with the anthemic "Angels in America" with lots of held out
lyrics by Lauren (vocals and bass). Marni helps out on harmonies
(vocals and guitar) while the backbeat is steadily held by Bill. Sean
rips and wails on lead guitar espcially on the second track "Day to
Live."
The band lets the
rage flow open on the angry sounding "Hug Me Kiss Me Rape Me" a song
sounding alot like Bikini Kill, but faster and more intense. Another
ode to society and the pressure applied to the female culture is
"Anorexic Nation." The mood is slowed down on "I Am" a powerful song
about not living up to preconcieved notions. This is a good track with
some strong breakdowns. DCD lets the shit the fan about being
objectified the 3 chord punk rock number "You Look Good from Behind."
The quality on this album is crisp and clean and the improvement can
definately be heard. The album ends on the hard rocking "Sugar n
Spice." DCD will have you rocking hard on this album and if you see
them play live you won't be disappointed. In their own words, "We don't
need to cocks to rock... we don't want the guys running the scene." - DCSka.com

Review-8/28/02 @ Winchesters Baltimore, MD
Die
Cheerleader Die was up next and they played a pretty solid set even
though certain people in the band may not think so. This was the first
time I saw the band since their summer tour and with the addition of
their new singer Tiffany and Russel their bass player. Both of these
new additions of the band seemed to be better then their former
counterpart. Tiffany's vocals complement Marni's quite well the band
tore through their set with "I Wanna Be a Slut Tonight" and "Sugar and
Spice" as well as a few new songs. They also did a grooving oldies
cover of "Run Around Sue." DC.Ska

The original
lineup for this show was supposed to be Girlush Figure, Die Cheerleader
Die, the Vivians and the Falling Action, but due to some issues I won't
even get into, the Vivians cancelled. Die Cheerleader Die from
Baltimore, MD opened the show with a kick ass powerful set. Playing
songs off their new release Chasing The American Dream, as well as some
older favorites like "Teenage Genocide," "Lesbian Action,"and "Sugar N
Spice." All crowd favorites of course!!! It was my first time seeing
DCD with their newest vocalist Tiffany and their new bassist Russel.
Tiffany added a little something to Marni's already kick ass singing!
The highlight of the set was definitely DCD doing a version of AC/DC's
"You Shook Me All Night Long" in which they were joined by Squeaky from
Girlush Figure. Totally kicked ass!!! By Mike Durian Girlpunk.net

Cheerleader Die--Chasing The American Nightmare
Self-released 2002
In spite of
some very strong and talented female voices, punk rock has always been
a bit of a boys club. Things aren't as bad as they once were in this
regard, but it's still a rough road for female-fronted bands in this
genre. That being said, if Chasing The American Nightmare is any
indication, the road ahead should be a little smoother for Die
Cheerleader Die than most.
Stylistically,
the obvious comparison for Die Cheerleader Die is Bikini Kill--both
play straightforward punk with girl-positive lyrics. However, to focus
solely on that base comparison is to sell this band short. From a
guitar standpoint, Chasing The American Nightmare resembles the NOFX
album Punk In Drublic--the type of guitar distortion used is very
metallic which gives these songs an extra sense of meatiness. Also, the
alternating vocals of Marni and Lauren both bear similarities to the
stylings of 440's frontwoman Wendy--gritty when they need to be (Die
Cheerleader Die's growling vocals are supplied by Marni) or powerfully
clean (Lauren handles this pace), depending on the situation.
Thankfully,
Die Cheerleader Die are able to back up their good production with
solid songs. People who crave the straightforward style of a band like
Bikini Kill will lose their minds over tracks like "Angels In America"
or the super-venomous "Anorexic Nation." That being said, Chasing The
American Nightmare is at its best when the band mixes things up a bit.
Look no further for proof of this than the CD's standout track, "Day To
Live." Stretching beyond the bounds of a simple punk tune, this song
incorporates some nice funky guitar work in the chorus sections which
almost conveys a biker-rock vibe.
With Chasing
The American Nightmare, Die Cheerleader Die have created a more than
worthwhile listening experience. Nice production and solid songwriting
make this CD deserving of a listen. As good as this is, one gets the
impression that Die Cheerleader Die really tears off heads in a live
setting--check 'em out when you can.
